Parties striving to break impasse on arms budget
各黨派試圖化解軍購案僵局

The China Post Staff

With just less than three weeks for the current legislative session, the opposition parties still show no signs of approving the special NT$610.8 billion military procurement budget or President Chen Shui-bian's nominations for the Control Yuan, the nation's highest impartial watchdog agency.

Lawmakers of the opposition Kuomintang (KMT) and the People First Party (PFP) said there is no change in the position that the Executive Yuan (Cabinet) first retract the allocation of the budget for purchasing of new weaponry from the U.S. and facilitate the passage of an arms procurement bill before discussing on the money needed.

They said that they support necessary and reasonable military spending, but a legal base for the huge expenditures is needed before they can review the items and budget.

It is also impossible for them to screen and endorse the nominees for the Control Yuan before the president revises the name list, which was not well received by the public as shown in recent opinion surveys, they said.

If the president and the Cabinet insist on forcing the military spending and the nominees down lawmakers' throats, lawmakers said they will have no choice in the next three weeks to focus on the central government budget for the new year and other bills that will affect more people.
